Emergency Contact
by Mary H. K. Choi

This book was labeled as young adult fiction, but I genuinely think anyone who likes stories about college-aged people learning about themselves and connections with others. The story was told from the alternating perspectives. One belonged to college freshman Penny, who is quirky, but not in an annoying manic pixie dream girl way. Her voice was fresh, funny, and real. The other perspective belonged to 21 year old Sam. His voice was distinct from Penny's, and I enjoyed following their individual struggles, as well as the unique ways their stories intertwine. This book was a great beach read that I highly recommend to people of all ages.

This book is so packed with information and history. Why do Americans do the things we do and think the things we think in relation to race? This book breaks down racist ideas and explains their origin. Showing who benefited from the ideas over the years.

A humorous look at how a personal organizer convinces an elderly artist to divest herself of a houseful of objects she's been hoarding for years. At the same time, the organizer gets to see and understand the why the artist held on to things and why she, herself could not let go of some things in her life. I recommend the book as it really got into some of the whys of hoarding and was written in an uplifting way.

The book, set in the early 1940's is the story of a young black woman in Harlem trying to raise her son and better their lives amid violence and racial inequalities. It is extremely well written and I was riveted to the story to see the outcome. It is very sad story of the difficulties faced this young woman that prevented her from achieving her goals. It was published in 1946, won a literary grant for the author and has a million copies in print. I highly recommend it.
